clothsurgeon's "Changing of the Guard" Collection Merges Streetwear With Savile Row Craftsmanship

“The collection epitomizes the intersection of my two areas; my roots in street culture and the world of tailored craftsmanship that I’m fascinated with.”

clothsurgeon, aka Rav Matharu, is best known for reworked and upcycled garment production — sold from London’s iconic Savile Row — and now the Leeds-born designer has just presented a new collection titled “Changing of the Guard.”

It doesn’t feel too long since clothsurgeon opened the doors to its Savile Row-based flagship store — which Hypebeast looked inside — however, since then, the brand has been keeping busy with various collection drops and collaborations. For example, the brand has connected with the likes of Coca-Cola for a collection that looked into the heritage of the beverage brand, and it has also unveiled a new solo capsule that explored the importance of layering during the brisk winters throughout inner London.

Now, clothsurgeon’s new collection takes inspiration from the Changing of the Guard ceremony that began in the 15th century during the reign of King Henry VII, when a guard change took place at the Tower of London. Since then, the term “Changing of the Guard” has been used more figuratively, and applied to any situation in which an individual or group faced with a task or responsibility is replaced by another individual or group.

“The collection epitomizes the intersection of my two areas; my roots in street culture and the world of tailored craftsmanship that I’m fascinated with.”

clothsurgeon now explores this concept with its new collection, using a slew of modernized tailoring to reinterpret the classic intricacy of Savile Row craftsmanship through a more street-orientated lens. With this in mind, the collection includes a melange of fabrications such as Loro Piana cashmere, suede, and leather across a selection of styles that lend themselves to contemporary design — through an abundance of free-flowing silhouettes — and more utility-inspired garments that make use of pockets and technical zippers.

Meanwhile, Holland and Sherry flannels are included in the collection, while the use of Fox Bros gun checks and Japanese nylons are also used. Speaking about his new collection, Rav Matharu said: “The collection epitomizes the intersection of my two areas; my roots in street culture and the world of tailored craftsmanship that I’m fascinated with. My new collection offers a new evolving perspective with the juxtaposition of these two worlds working harmoniously — all housed on Savile Row: the greatest menswear street in the world.”

You can take a closer look at the “Changing of the Guard” collection from clothsurgeon above and it is available to shop via the brand’s official website now.
