The Bank of England Reveals First Look at King Charles Banknotes

Expected to enter public circulation in mid-2024.

Design

Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II earlier this year, standard protocols for King Charles’ assent to the British throne have been underway since her death.

While King Charles’ coronation ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 6, 2023, alongside his wife, Camilla, Britain is prepared to welcome the monarch with the creation of new banknotes to be used alongside current bills.

The Bank of England has shared a first look at the updated currency featuring a portrait of King Charles, cementing himself as the second monarch to be showcased on the U.K.’s central bank notes since 1960. No changes to the design will be made besides the portrait alteration, appearing on £5, £10, £20, and £50 Great British Pound bills.

50p coins are already in circulation, and all further coinage updates are expected to release in the coming months.

The new banknotes will display King Charles’ portrait on each bill’s front and transparent security window, entering public circulation in mid-2024 alongside current monies featuring Queen Elizabeth II.

In other news, Douglas Gordon is displaying his first exhibition solely dedicated to neon signage.
